History of the Department

Teaching foreign languages at the University started in 1949, however, the Russian language was the only foreign language taught in the first few years.
Latin was introduced for 1st year students in 1954. The organisational unit got its name: Department of Foreign Languages in 1955 when the studying of such foreign languages as English, German, French was made compulsory. From 1982 on the number of compulsory language classes has been 4 classes/week for six semesters. English for veterinary purposes was introduced as an optional subject in 1994.
The language teachers of the department prepare Hungarian students for language exams recognized by the state in English and German, teach compulsory Latin for 1st year students and optional veterinary technical language in English, organize English and German language courses for the staff of the faculty, provide optional Hungarian and Latin courses for international students.
